Scalpay is a thriving fishing community, now accessed by bridge from the neighbouring island of Harris.
Pictured left, Hirta House can be seen overlooking the harbour.
We are easy to reach by car - just 10 minutes drive from Tarbert (ferry from Skye) and less than an hour from Stornoway (ferry from Ullapool and flights from the mainland).

It's only 20 minutes to the marvellous west coast beaches of Luskentyre and Seilebost in South Harris.
Other facilities on Harris include tennis courts, 9 hole golf course, swimming pool, cycle hire, genealogy centre, Harris Tweed weavers, craft shops and places to eat out.

| Scalpay Lighthouse |
|
A circular waymarked walk will take you Eilean Glas lighthouse (built in 1788) on the east coast of Scalpay.
The keepers houses (built by Robert Louis Stevenson's grandfather) remain intact.
There are breathtaking views across the sea to the Shiants, Skye, Uist and the mainland.

| Boat Trips |
|
Local boat trips are operated from Tarbert, Leverburgh and Flodabay. In favourable weather conditions, Kilda Cruises can take you to the Shiant Isles, Flannan Isles, Rona, Monach Isles and St Kilda. Porpoises, seals and puffins can sometimes be seen.
Recently made famous following publication of the book 'Sea Room' by the owner Adam Nicolson, the uninhabited Shiants lie 10 miles off the coast of Scalpay and Harris.
From Leverburgh you can also take the ferry to explore the Isle of North Uist for a day.

| Walks on Harris |
- An Clisham - at 2621 feet (799 metres) the highest mountain on Harris
- Rhenigidale and deserted village of Molinginish
- The Harris Walkway from Ardvourlie with spectacular views over Loch Seaforth.
- Walks from Northton up Chaipaval (1000 feet) or across the machair to Rudh'an Teampull (12th century chapel)
- The coastal walk from Hushinish overlooking Scarp (see photo at top of page)
- Footpaths right across the island from one coast to the other including the ancient 'Coffin Track'
- Walks to Loch Chliostair and Loch Voshimid near Amhuinnsuidhe Castle

| Wildlife |
The islands are a haven for birdwatchers. Buzzards and oyster catchers are often seen.
Rare birds such as the Skua, Corncrake and Red-throated diver can sometimes be spotted.
The high hills are the haunt of the Golden Eagle.
If you are very lucky you may spot an otter.
In summer the machair flowers in a riot of colour, while later in the season the heather blooms.
The MacGillivray Centre at Northton (named after the famous Scottish naturalist) will tell you all about the islands' natural habitat.
